Coghlan, Jeremiah (1775?-1844)
Captain in navy; mate of merchant ship at Plymouth, 1796, when he attracted attention of Sir Edward Pellew, Viscount Exmouth, who placed him on his ship the Indefatigable; commanded Viper frigate, 1800; captured French gun-brig Cerbere after hard fight off Port Louis, and was promoted lieutenant, 1800; commanded sloop on Jamaica Station, 1804-7; senior officer of light squadron in Bahamas, 1807-11; captain, 1810; flag-captain to Pellew in Mediterranean, 1812; CB, 1815; on South American Station, 1826-30.
